ALEXANDRA.

May 30, 1873. This settlement has presented quite a deserted appearance these last few days with no business doing whatever. The contractor, Mr Henderson, has already the frame of our new Courthouse erected ; it appears a verv small unpretentious building. The store erected tor the Maoris on the beach will be, 1 fancy, the fines* Jbuilding of the two when the Courthouse is finished. Alexandra is now without a constable, Mr Neii McLeod having been removed to Jlaglan, and his successor has not yet arrived. I believe the Raglan constable comes here. General regret is'felb here for the sudden and unexpected removal of Constable McLeod, who, from the quiet and uno3ien;atious, thoughstrict, manner in which he performed his duties has j made many friends, and our best wishes follow him to his new sphere of "duty. The new native difficulty at Taranaki does not appear to cause much surprise, amongst the Kingites, I was talking to one of Tawhiao's 'chief men yesterday oh the subject, expressing my surprise at the' natives' impudence, when he remarked : " Did you not hear Tawhiao, at the late meet ng, say that he was King of all ITow Zenland." "Yes," I replied. « Well then," was the answer, "that accounts for the proceedings there now." Of course I do not for one moment believe this ; I only give it as a Maori opinion. Te Whiti, no doubt, is the head and front of the affair.

At Hikurangi they are quietly waiting the result of Rewi's negotiatiations with the Native Minister Wahanui, with his people, have left for their own? settlement.— Own Correspondent.
