TE AWAMUTU RACES.

Our Races on Saburday were a great success, and the stewards and promoters of the meeting may well congratulate themselves on having such a good field and excellent sport. There was a large gathering of settlers, and nearly everyone who could possibly be spared from their homes made it a poinb bo be presenb. The rain, which seemed threatening ab mid-day, came down rather unpleasanbly about 3 o'clock, and caused a thin coarse for bhe last two races. The first' race of bhe day was the Handicap Huhdle Bace, of 20sovs, with a sweep of lsov eaoh for acceptance. Amount accruing from sweep to go to second horse. Distance, 2 miles ; over 8 flight of hurdles, 3 feet 6 inche. . Nomination, 10s ; acceptance, 20s. Sportsman 1 Loafer 2 This race commenced at 1 p.m. ; four started. Sportsman and Loafer raced from the start well together. It was a grand race ', both jumped the last hurdle, and 'and amid much excitement came neck and neck np the sbraighb, bobh whipping, but just at the post Sportsrnau managed to get a short head in front. Clyde wenb with the lead, Lady Godiva second (hard held), and .passing the stand she assumed the command and was never collared, although Sweetbriar,' who was nearly last ab the start, came through the horses and ran a good second. A probesb was enbered againsb Lady Godiva for having won over £10 at one. time, but it was not decided. Selling Hack Race of 10 sovs; distance, 1 mile; weight, 10 stone. Winner to be sold immediately after the race for £15, any surplus to go to the funds. Entrance, 10s ; post entries. Minnie Athol ... 1 Eleven started. Won easily by Mr John Simpson's mare Minnie Athol, by Wamba- She was sold immediately after the race for £23. Te Awamutu Cup Handicap of 25sov,s together with Silver Cup, presented by Mr Lewis, added to a sweepstake of lsov. for acceptors ; 10 per cent, of gross amount of stakes to go to the second horse. 2 miles ; nomination, 20s; acceptance, 30s. Golden Crown , e . 1 Lady Godiva... ... 2 Seven started. After a good run Rally and Osman Pacha showed in front, followed by Barney and the Crown, Lalla Rookh last, bub gradually the Crown drew through his horses till nearing home when he took command, with Lady Godiva lying second and Lalla Rookh waiting on the pair, quite ready to win if the Crown could not, but Lady Godiva (who ran against a post at the lasb turn) could never get quibe up, and lost by a lengbh, Lalla Rookh bhird. Mr Allen declared to win with the CrownGalloway Race of lOsovs, for horses 14.2 and under; top weight, 9st 71bs allowed for every inch under 14.2. lmile. Entrance, 15s; second horse to save his stake. Wee' Pet 1 Nell 2 Pnniu went away with the lead, bub bolted at the gabe, and was I consequently oub of it. Woe Pet, who gradually came to the front and won easily, with Nell second. Ladies' Purse of 15sovs. 1\ milos ; : 1 welter weights for age. Orakau took the lead from the start and was never collared, albbough chie Crown, from being lasb, came through bub could never catch the leader, who won hands down, Robin Hood third. The last event of the day was the Consolation) Handicap of 10 sovs, for all horses beaten ai? the meeting; 1 mile. Nomination, os ; acceptance, 10s. Four started. Won by Lallah Rookh, 9st. 71b ; Barneys 7st 41b., second ; Rally, 7sb., third. Osman Pascha bolted at the gate.
