NGARUAWAHIA.
May 8. Was it a surprise that the poor little township of Ngaruawahia was even represented at the first hunt meeting in Waikato :it was a wonder certainly The Government will do nothing to help us. I'he beautifully situatod township, too healthy to require a doctor's attendance once a week, even that did not pay. The jail abolished, haviug no prisoners. The hospital, furnished at a cost of upwards of 4)100 is turned into a lockup and good residence for the jailers and warders still iu Government employ or (pay) at a cost to the country of about £330 per annum. The old jail has not been used since poor Morgan was murdered. Wo have had no visit from tlio R.M. to hold a Court for about two mouths. Why two men should be paid 10s a day each to walk to the train to fetch their newspaper and letters onco or twice a day is a thing "No fellah can understand." We wore very much disappointed last Sunday. The Rev. H. S. Davis was expected in the evening to hold a service, but it turned out that there was ouly to be a lay service. Only 8 or 9 attended. The Presbyterian Church was very well filled, near 100 being present. What is wanted is a parson to hold a service in the morning in the English Church and Presbyterian in the evening. I believe both ohurchos would be well attended. As things aro managed at present and past it is nofc to be expected peoplo will attend the English Church regularly, its uow about six weeks since a priest has read the absolution prayer and people go about in considerable perturbration of mind, sniffing sulphur in every breeze. Fbom a Correspondent.
