THE NATIVE MEETING.
[From our own Correspondent, via Alexandra. J
KOPOA, Tuesday, 5 p.m. Nothing of any importance here as yet. Te Wheoro's party with war canoes came up. and were received at the old Mission landing, »n:l with the usual formalities of firing etc., by about 300 Kingites, headed by Purukutu, the majority of the Kingites, only looking ou. After speeches tbe greeting was over on both sides, the Jtiauhatis started prayers. In the midst of them » shot was fired by one ot the friendlies, who immediately all to&k to tbe right about to their canoes, leav. ing the Kingites most unceremotii ously. On the return of the friendlies, led by Wheoro, the Hauhau.opened oUjfc m line, the visitors walking with their swags m the centre to Tawhiao's quarters, the distance of about a quarter of ;■• mile nway, where a tangi took place, and food was presented to thorn. There ar6 immense numbers of natives here, but from the way they are scattered about it is hard to say how many — certainly more, than last Hikursngi meeting. Some fifty Europeaus are present, whei have been well received auci
cared for at Thomp son's house, and food 'will be presented to them to-morrow. They also have a bullock for their consumption, when the general distribution of food, which is piled m enormous quantises, is made. It is generally uu derstood that no talking of importance is likely to take place until Friday, when it is rumored Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehau wih come up. The reason for this sup position appears from the fact of Paul and the Ngapuhis not having yet come up from Alexandra. Up to the present moment no direct invitation has been sent.
