WAIPU, Thursday. DEATH OF MR JOHN , MUNRO. Mr John Munro, pf Whangarei Heads, many years M.H R. for Marsden, who has been suffering for some time, died on Sunday last, at the age of 79 years.

It is fixed that the railway lo ths West' Coast of the Sou.th Islaud shall go by-Brunnerton. The route on the eastern side of the mountains is also determined on Plans and specifications are being got ready with a view of calling for tenders immediately.
There wei-o symptoms of an antiChinese riot on the wharf yesterday afternoon. By the Omeo, from Newcastle, # wei'e 125 Chinese pas sengers for Port Chalmers. A crowd assembled around the vessel on arrival. After gazing at the Celestials for some time in evident disgust, the crowd commenced to relieve their /feeling by throwing whiting and other missiles at them. The Chinese took rafuge under '.he forecastle herd, aud some of them retaliated by "shying" lumps of coal at the crowd. The police dispersed the small crowd.
There is no truth in the reports about Te Whif.i ordering the Europeans away, and threatening them. The whole report seems to have arisen from .some bounceable taik by a native named Nagturuan, who visited one of the settlements the day before. He is of no importance, however. Messrs M.uekey and Bkke have not yet sent in a full report.
DUNE DIN, Thursday. Julius Eastwood, the member of the Timaru Volunteer Corps who distinguished himself iu Dunedin soon after the Invercargill review, by leading- six or seven other Volunteers to an infamous street, and demanding £5 from one of the unfortunate inmates of a house there, appeared, on remand, at the Police Court to-day on the charge ol larceny. This charge was not sustdiued, and that bf petty larceny was (hen substituted, upon which he was committed for trial, bail being allowed. LATE GUN ACCIDENT. The result of the inquest ou the body of Mr Duncan's son was " accidental de^th," It appears the boy had been leaning on the muzzle of die gun with his arm. The gun was at half-cock when ifc went off, but the boy could not tell how the accident happened.
