Yesterday the County Ohairman interviewed the Ngahkaka tribe at Te Aroha with reference to oppoition to snagging the Waihou River. The chief of the tribe refused to allow the work to proceed, unless compensated for loss of telegraph wires He said he did not stop Mr Eirth from snagging, because he did it the right way. Failing a satisfactory reply, Mr Brodie left them. He will tase steps m a court of law to assert the right of the County to snag the river. GRAHAMSTOWN Tuesday. Whilst removing a house at Waiotahi Creek yesterday afternoon a i man found an outcrop reef, which i showed gold plainly. The discovery 1 has created some excitement, and claims are pegged out. The natives again obstructed snagging operations m the Waihou | River yesterday morning. Twenty [ members of a small tribe named Ngatikaka proceeded on board the punts, took possession of the snaggiag punt, leaving the workmen unmolested. The County .Chairman remonstrated with the natives, but without avail, and has telegraphed , to Mr Sheehan, asking permission to prosecute the offenders.
TATJPO, Tuesday. Miss McAuley's body was found yesterday morning m the Waikato river, a mile below this place. An inquest was held, and a verdict of accidental drowning returned. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. At a meeting of bookmakers m was resolved to post defaulters, who are numerous here. OPUNAKE, last night. There is nothing fresh on the plains. ALEXANDRIA, Tuesday. The Khedive of Egypt has dismissed the French Minister of Public Works and Rivers Wilson, British Finance Minister, who however refused to accept his dismissa'. A new Ministry, formed under the presidency of Cheraf Pascha, is composed exclusively of natives. Wheat is 6d lower.
