ALTERATION OF RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
PUBLIC MEETING, HAMILTON. A meeting of inhabitants of the Hamilton district was held on Tuesday evening. Cr. J. Knox, as Deputy Mayor, occupied the chair, in his Worship's absence. The following resolutions were then severally put to the meeting, and carried : — 1. Proposed by Mr R. F. Sandes, and seconded by Mr L. O'Neill, "That this meeting, having heard that it is the intention of the Government to cease running the afternoon train between AucklandOhaupo, and vice versa, view with deep concern such proposed alteration as being retrogressive instead of progressive, and therefore detrimental to the best interests of this district." 2. Proposed by Mr K. Hill, and seconded by Mr Martin, " That this meeting would urge upon the Government, first, that the extension of the railway from Ohaupo to Te Awamutu will soon \ be completed, and as that will bring into more direct communication with Auckland a large and wealthy district, there is likely to be a considerable inorease in passenger and goods traffic. Secondly, that the Auckland-Ohaupo line is, at • present, being worked at a profit, and I therefore the neoessity for a reduction of expenditure does no*- exist." 3. Proposed by Mr P. Walker, and seconded by Mr Gwynne, "That the Chairman of this meeting be instructed to forward the foregoing resolutions to the Minister for Public Works, without delay." The following telegram, sent that day, by order of the Deputy-Mayor, on behalf of the Council, was read to the meeting : — "To the Hon Member of Public Works, Wellington— Sir, having heard that the afternoon passenger trains, between Auckland and Waikato, are to be discontinued, we beg to draw your attention to the great inconvenience whioh will result to the public, and to the check which will be put to rapidly increasing traffic. Hope you will reconsider matter, and continue Dresent arrangements,—. (Signed) J. B. Warps, Mayor."
A vote of thanks to the Chairman, moved by Mr K. Hill and secondod by Mr Sandes, brought th meeting to a close.
