THE WATS THAT ARE DARK.

Sik, — A considerable amount of feeling

has been engendered, by thd correspondence which has recently taken place m your columns, re the action of the Newcastle Highway Board, and many of the settlers are pleased that it has taken place, so that thp Boa "d may thoroughly understand how earnest the ratepayers are to have duo light shed upon their trustees proceedings. It must be remembered that the Newcastle Highway Board is peculiarly situated, being the only executive body for two distinct districts, Whacawhata and Nararuawahia, between which a certain natural jealousy has always existed. This has been plainly shown at the election of trustees, each district indeavouring to obtain a majority m the Board. Under these circumstances, it is only to be expected that the ratepayers m each district should like to know exactly what is done m the Board, and whether their particular representatives are doinjj justice to all. We insist upon due publication being given to the doings of all other' public bodies, and why not the same with i ugh way Boards. Are we to place more confidence m Highway Trustees, than m Members of both Upper ancl Lower House of Parliament, for, this is what we aro expected to do. It is to be sincerely hopod, m the interest of all x*atepayers, that the racent agitation will have the effect of producing, m the columns of our Waikato newspaper, a regular report of the proceedings of the Newcastle Hi'_'liw>iy Board. — I am, &C, A WHATAWHATA SETTLER,
