THE WAYS OF THE WICKED ARE DARK.

Sir,—l have observed a letter in your paper, bearing the signature of " Whatawhata," and I must say that anything more presumptuous I never read. What next will he attack ? Does he imagine that his paltry interference -will upset the customs and ways which traditional use has made sacred ? Can he not recollect the many fat little jobs given by the Newcastle Highway Board to their friends and admirers in the past ? Yet, this infatuated person wishes their proceedings to be made public, apparently, in his ignorance, unaware that a good deal of the business would not bear publication, and this he might have known from the persistent refusal from time immemorial to open any of the windows through which prying ratepayers might look and learn. The next thing we shall have will be this Whatawhata " cuss "objecting to the present Chairman using the bundle of proxies which he so regularly hauls out at the annual elections, and by which means he always comes in at the head of the poll. No, my Whatawhata friend! We, at this end, don't want any improving. !First, get a Boad Board of your own —then you may talk. In the meantime, take a bone when we—the majority—throw you one, and don't talk to us about newspapers and daylight, for wo don't want any of that nonsense. —I am, &c, Noabtjawahia.
