DEATH OF MR T. MONTGOMERY.
Our readers will bs surprised and grieved to hear of the death, at Hamilton, after j a very short illness, of Mr Thomas | Montgomery, for some four years past, Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court :of Lower Waikato. During the latter part of the week, Mr Montgomery complained of a boil m the back of the neck, at the top of the spinal column, but late on Friday night, the pain becoming excessive, Dr Waddiugton was called m, and at once pronounced the supposed boil to be a very dangerous carbuncle. Dr Carey was called m, on Saturday morning, m consultation, but no operation was possible, and the most that could be done, was to assist respiration, which had become difficult, through the irritation of the nerves acting on the respitory organs. From the first, neither Dr Waddington nor Dr Carey gaze any decided hopes of his recovery, and their patient continued to sink until two hours after midnight on Saturday, some twenty-four hours only after the nature of the disease was known, when he expired without a struggle, aud appavently without pain, havin been unconscious for some ten hours. Mr Montgomery was a young man, and very generally liked and respected, for his obliging inoffensive disposition, whether m his official or private life, and as he lay, hanging between life and death, throughout the day, on Saturday, a very general feeling of gloom pervaded the move than ordinarily busy streets of the town. About midday, the Rev. Mr Evans, who had been telegraphed for, arrived, and administered spiritual consolation to the now dying man, who was perfectly conscious at that time. On Monday morning, his remains wore removed, iv a coffin, from Gwyuue's Hotel, where he had resided for some years, and taken to tho Masonic Hall, iv East Hamilton, where th3y now lie, awaiting the funeral ceremony, which takes place to-day. Mr Montgomery was an enthusiastic Mason, aud an officer of Lodge Beta, aiid the funeral service will be a Masonic one.. The deceased gentleman was brought • up m Wanganui, where his parents resided for mauy years. He leaves a widowed sister a Mrs Speed, residing m Picton, and a nephew, iv the office of Mr Olivier, Solicitor, of Christchurch.
