February 21, 1879 It is most probable that the great native meeting, with Sir George Grey and. tho Native Minister, will uot take place at Kopua, as expected, as Te Ngakau, who has taken the principal share of the work, iv collecting the fish aud other tood necessary for the large number expected, insists ou having the meeting Avhere the food now is, at Hikuraugi. He says it is easier for the people to walk to the food, than for him to bring it down to Kopua, where there is no house accommodation or firewood. He will likely have his own way, as another arguuip.nt of his is, that too many Europeans would force their way to a place so near to the European settlements, and cause trouble. Hikurangi is, from its position and circumscribed extent, one of the most unpleasant of spots that could be found for the assemblage of a large number of people, at least m the opinion of any European, its only recommendation is the large quantity of firewood to be found there. The 16th of next month is the day at present fixed for the meeting. Natives are just now very strict at Kopua, and will alloAV no vssits from Europeans. Tawhio's eldest daughter, with her relative, Te Reinga or Te Rama, as she is now called (quite time she changed it) was down here last week, visiting Major and Mrs Mair. It was the first time the Princess was allowed to visit a European settlement siucc the war. — Correspondent.
