GAS SUBERSEDED.

The 'Philadelphia Leader 1 states that the electrio light has been adopted in the water works in Chiohago, and tho local newspapers, in speaking of it, say it makes the interior of the main building during the, eight hours of night as light as day, at an expenditure of eight cents per night. Ono uighfc last week it was experimented with iu lighting up various prominent buildings of the city, the Grand Pacific Hotel, Tremont" House, and others. The light was fixed in the top of the lofty tower of the water works, the eugiue in the basement furnishes the power that made the powdered carbon as it ftew off the magnets incandescent with heat so great that iron spikes melted like tallow when held in it. Then this brilliant light was thrown across the sky, dispelling the night as quickly as a flash of lightning. It is claimed that, two miles away, people were able to read a newspaper easily, with no other assistance than this electrio light. The light, was successfully turned j upon different portions of the city. Tho twigs and green lea res on the trees were brought out with aimirable effect, just as though there was a f"ll blaze of sunlight upon them. When the full form of tho blaze way turned upon the Grand Pacific Hotel, two miles away, people at the summit of the tower, from where this light was thrown, were able to distinguish people down at the hotel. Crowds of people were on the streets witnessing tho experiment, and, at the close, a great many forced their way into the waterworks to witness the illumination there. By means of tho electric light, the shadow of a gaa jet was made visible, showing what a dim, imperfect light it gave, and how fall of impurities the yellow gas flame wa9. A movement is on foot in to do away with present system of using gas to illuminate the streets, and substitute in its stead a dozen electric lights at different elevated points, with whioh it is claimed the entire town could be made as light as day out of doors, and afc much less expense than the present costly gaslight system.
