Ma Heatley, Engineer of the Pnblic Works Department, m connection with the Taupo road party, ia now engaged m surveying tho river above Cambridge, with a view to ascertaining how far it is practicable to make the river navigable. ' A party of three, took up a small boat as far as Gorton, on Tuesday, experiencing great difficulty. In several placeß, the boat had to be towed along by the bank, and waa, on one or two oocasions, nearly upset by eddies and whirlpools. I Me Db Latour on a Coming Dissolution. — At the conclusion of his speech, to his Naseby constituents, Mr Do Latour ia reported to have said, the other day, " You must expect to see a strong array against the Government next session, it they are true to thoir liberal interests, as I know they will be. Their majority will be a probable minority, and the decision will rest with tho peoplo. Our tender hearted friends who supported us with thoir hearts ever m their mouth, and roproachos on their lips, must, for once and all, decide. The true supporters of a liberal Government m the Houso and country assert that the time has come when concessions to the waverers must no longer be made. As a people rejoicing m ' the advent of Sir George Grey to powor, wo claim that wo thall be allowed to strengthen his hands, if the Parliament at present elected refuses its duty. There is not a majority m the House, whatever may bo said of tho show of votes. We may be told that it is true to tho interests of the interests of the majority of New Zealand. The liberals and others must bo made to take sides, and it is for the electors i to give the time." j The sitting of the District Court at Hamilton has been adjourned uutil April 17 m consequence of the absence of tho judgo at the present time m Wellington. Me Nbilson scratched Fishhook at 3.30 on Saturday afternoon for all his Wellington engagements. Entsies for the handicap pigeon match, to tako place ou the 14th inst. at Hamilton, must be sent m to Captain Dawson or Mr Richard Gwynne before 6 p m. of the 12th inst. The handicaps will bo declared tho next day, and acceptances will bo received up to 10 p.m. that night. Whatawhata and Tuhikabamea Postal Services.— It is with pleasure we observe the stand which the neighboring district of Whatawhata haa taken against tho stoppago of tho Saturday's mail to that township, but at the Bame timo a very much moro inexpensive and convenient service might be arranged than has beon hitherto carried on. The Saturday mail to Whatawhata, lately discontinued, waa a spocial service, costing about £25 per annum. Thia mail might havo boen, and probably will be, carried from Hamiltou. What wo would suggest is that, aa a mail loaves tho latter town for Tuhikaramea every Saturday, a slight addition to the present contract prico would probably enable tho mailman to go via Whatawhata. This would bo the simplest and cheapoat way out of tho difficulty, aud at the same time it would be the moans of establishing a moro frequent mail communication with tho Tuhikaramea district — tho only mail at present enjoyed by Tuhikaramea being on Saturday, going and comiug on tho same day. The time ha** surely arrived when a large and prosperous section of Waipa settlers, such as aro located m those districts, are entitled to more than one mail per week, especially aa an oxtra mail on Tuesday or Thursday, either from Whatawhata or Hamilton, would add very little to the ' expense of the Department. Perhaps hi a caso like this, it would bo as well for tho residents of the districts interested to forward to the Chief Postmaster a request for |an explanation of the proposed mail route, with the probable cost of it attached. The Postmaster would then bo abe to deal directly with tho subject, instead of perhaps referring to those unacquainted with tho district for information iv the matter.
