In consequence of the disclosures which took placo m the recent prosecution against Mrs Deborah Hood, of Ngaruawahia, for travelling by the train without paying her fare, the railway authorities have discharged Mr Holmes, stationmaster at Newmarket, and the two guards, McDonald and Sampson, from the service of the Railway Dopartmentinent. The ' Herald ' is responsible for the following, which it publishes, as received, by special Avire, from a Wellington correspondent : — " It is rumoured here that several influential natives m the' Waikato district have been m communication with the Native Department, bringing under its notice the action of certain Europeans iv the Upper Waikato, urgiug them not to agree to any terms of tho land questions between Sir George Grey and themselves, and advising them, m terms of entreatment, not to be a party to the March gathering. Should the ' agitators " continue their present course, iv all probability the Government will take steps to give them an opportunity of proving their alleged faithfulness and honesty to the native race m one of the Criminal Courts of the colony." The Immigrant Girls by the Maraval. — An amusing story, says the ' Star,' which is well vouched, for, has been related to us m connection with the engagement of immigrants who arrived by the Maravel. A gentleman who is remarkable for his kind and obliging disposition went to interview the ' young ladies,' with tho view of selecting a suitable servant. His eyes lighted on a stylish young person, to whom he told his wants, and finally made her a liberal offer, m the way of board aud wages. To whom that young lady said : ' How many children have you got f He: 'Four.' 'Oh, dear,' replied that young woman, ' I'm afraid four's too many.' And the gentleman had to pass on. But another family man, who was bent on the same errand, shortly afterwards interviewed that young lady, and was received with the same interrogatories. To the question, 'How many children have you?' he replied with the utmost sang froid, ' Well, I have four Miss ; but, if they would be any trouble to you, I will undertake to drown two of 'cm ; m fact, if it would b 9 any convenience to you, I wouldn't mind drowning the lot !' That young lady was engaged. A recent visit to the railway line between Hamilton and Ohaupo, made by our special reporter, shows that a great deal more than the facts of the case warranted has been made m Auckland of the alleged breaking of the line near the spot where tho large break occurred some time ago, before the line was finally taken over from the contractors Deeper drains were at that time put m on either side tlie line, for some distance beyond the small spot which gave way, and these have had. the very natural effect of causing the swamp itself and the line to settle. Where, however, the large quantities of ballast were shunted into the hole filled up by Mes3rs Topham & Angus, the line has not settled, and this small portion remaining at the original level alongside the lately sunken portion, gives the appearance of a break where, had there been no such artificial knoll left, all would have been on much the same level. What is needed is to lower this rise to nearly the level of the line on either side of it. As the drains are deepened from time to time along each side the line, it must be expected that the way itsolf will settlo, more perhaps m some pi ices than m others, and thus cause the existenco of gradients where at present there is almost a dead level. The Waitdkuburu bridge, near the Piako Store, is notified by the Waitoa Highway Board as not safe for heavy traffic.
