WHATAWHATA.
December 17. The weather is at 'a-t becoming rather dry, This wiil su t the hay. making, which is about to commence m all directions. The grain and root ciops m the district are looking very well, the season having been favoiable thus far. -Road making is being vigorously carried on, though not as yet m the immediate neighbourhood of . Whatawhata. Survey is being un deof the new road from our township to the Hamilton station, by Mr Palmer and staff. £1,40U is the estimated cost of this work, and the money has, I believe, been applied for. A capital job has been made of ou? well-known cemetery on the river bank, A party of A. 'J, have been here a few weeks, and what wi'li refixing the headboards aud fencing, &c, have quite removed the miserable and dilapidated appearance of them closure. The A .0. leave this week. We had a quadrille party the other evening, and it was quite up to the standard of its predecessor, eveiyone enjoying themseves, and dancing was kept up till a late, or rather an early hour. Again, we had to de* pend on Mr T. White, for almost the whole of the niu3ic, his assistant failing to put iv an appearance. Mr White, however, is as untiring as he is generous, and well deserves the hearty thanks he received at the conclusion. Great preparations are being made for our Christmas Sforts, so that we may fairly anticipate a successful race meeting. A large sum bus been subscribed, and the priaes will be wo.-th running for. It was at lir.-it thought that the natives would be able to amalgamate, and have their races with outs, but this has been found to be impossible. The native laces will therefore tako place on the following day, on our course, many of their events being open to all comers, wiih fair prizes. Some little excitement is being felt m connection with -thp of a Highway Board -Trustee, m place ot Major Wilson, resigned, Tho Ngaruawahia end of the distriot have, I believe, a candidate m the field, and, no doubt, they will succeed iv returning him. The general feeling iv this pai tis, that both m i hy Highway Board, and m ih'J Couu'y Council, WhatawhaU is very fairly represented, aud we are already feeling the good results of it. I may also i\dj, and X believe I am QUly CApi-msing the mind of the whole district, that whoever is electe.l fur the vacant seat, we shall never gpt a hotter n,an than Major Wilson, and it was with rfgret we learnt his resignation.— Own Cou, RESPONDENT,
