The work will be begun immediately. - WELLINGTdN,*Sunday. The. Native Minister returned overland last evening from the West Coast. During his visit, he stopped at nearly all the, principal settlements aloug the coast, discussing' and ar ranging with the native people a number of questions which have been causey of trouble and dissatisfaction for years. He, also, transacted a large amount of general public feu&iuess at the various European settlements on his line of route. It is understood that he has made arrangements of a satisfactory character for the acquisition of land along the line of the proppsed Taranaki- Auckland railway, and that. m a few days an expedition will start from the Taranaki side to explore the best line of route. At Wanganut he had to grapple with a very troublesome. question, viz., the rolative rights of private land buyers and the Goverment. In dealing with the cases brought' before him the Native -Ministei upheld the rights. of the Crown, and justified the acts of the present land purchase officers, <on the ground that the construction of the Taranaki- Waikato line required that, as much land as possible should b" acquired on the West Coast on the pubiio account, and that private interests must give ! way to the larger question of the public good. There is great consternation amongst the members of the Wanganui land ring m copsequence. Mr Sheehan will leave for Auckland some day this next week. He will at once proceed to the Waikato to meet Rewi arid the King, when the time and place of meeting for the final settlement with the Kingites willbedetermined. He will probably address his constituents Rodney during his stay, and will also visit the Thames. His stay will be short, as he proposes to. return to the West Coast, and remain there for some time, so as to insure tho safe and - expeditious com-; pletionof theWaimate plain* survey, and the acquisition of other lands to mako the Tarauiiki and.
