Cambridge Athletic Sports.— -These events come off on Thursday, the 26th inst., m Mr Share's paddock, at Cambridge. The 'programme appears m our advertising columns of to-day. There are not less than eighteen prizes to be contended for, and the Cambridge Reed Band will enliven the proceedings. The present hot weather is causinga steady rise m the Waikato river, through tho melting of the snows up country. Tho river rose two inches on Sunday, and fully as much yesterday. Thb Hamilton Beidoe. — Preparations, are now made for a start. A monkey or, pile driver has been erected on the west bank of the river, and there will be nothing; noj^j, after a day or two, to prevent' bperationßgbing on steadily ahead. It has been determined that the commencement of, a work of this kind, of so much importance to the borough, shall be made the ocpasion of some little public demonstration', and to-morrow the first blow to the first pile will be given by the Mayor. The occasion will be made one of ; public festivity, and something more 'than the customary bottle of champaign-' broken on the pile will be broached, m commemoration of the commencement of the work. There will, doubtless, be a large muster oi the inhabitants, to witness so interesting and long looked for an event.The Piako Races will be held this .year; as they were last year, on St. Patrick's day, and will come off m Mr Taylor! h paddock. A very handsome silver cup, to be run for m the Piako Cup Race, is now on exhibition at Mr McLernon's jewellers shop, Hamilton. We are informed that subscriptions have poured m liberally, and that the prises given wiUi m many cases, be sufficient to attract a good class of horses. The list of events will, no doubt, appear m our columns before the time for receivins: eutrios closes, so that a well contested field may be looked for. The advance which the Piako distinct lias made of late, and the faoilitios'offored to visitors m good roads and good hotel accommodation will, doubtless, all help to render the Piako Autumn Race Meeting an attractive one.
