Watene» VIIO is the heir of the late chief Te Hapuku, went to the wool shed at Te Aute, to-day, owned by the Hon. Mr Russell, and took forcible possession of 1000 bales of wool He took them to the station and sent the same by train to Napier this morning. Mr Russell stated that he held the wool, having a lion thereon, but Watene has been advised that no mortgage had been registered either 011 sheep or wool by the late chief Te Hapuku, and therefore that he has a right to tnJJJ same. This has brought about at unpleasant state of affairs boween Mr Russell and the natives. ■»EW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. A large aNd influential deputation waited upon the Native Minister yesterday morning with reference to the holding of the sale of theWaimato plains at New Plymouth. Mr Sbeehan said he would communicate the wishes of tli6 deputation to the department, but thought the sale might be held m Wellington. The deputation also asked that a thousand immigrants might be sent to Taranaki. as well as 250 single girls, as servants, as there was great scarcity of all kinds of labour m Taranaki. This Mr Sheehan said he would attend to, and as it was feared there would not be labor enough to get m the harvest, some men might be sent here from Otago and West Coast. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Government have sent to the Agent-General to send out an instructoi for a deaf and dumb asylum. In reference to the O'Connor poisoning case, .the Minister of Justice causes reply to bo sent to the Mayor of Wellington, m which he says :— The Government, after careful consideration, sees no reason for remitting the sentence passed on this prisoner. The jury who saw and heard the witnesses believed their statements, mid it is not thought that their verdict should be set aside." REWI VISITS NEW PLYMOUTH.
Yesterday, Rewi, his wife, and children were driven into town from Waitara* and afterwards, Taonui (one of the principal chiefs of the tribe), who, with his wife, was driven m by Mr Walker, of Auckland. They put up at Col tier's Masonic Hotel, and Mr Sheehan invited the Mayor and a few of the principal settlers of the place to meet him there. On assembling, Mr Sheehan asked Mi* Parris to drink the health of Rewi, which he did. Rewi replied that he couH not speak out his thoughts on the impulse of the moment. He had only jusfc arrived m town, and could not collect his thoughts to make a speech of any length, hut would drink to their healths. Mr Standish, the Mayor, then proposed Revri's health, and welcomed him to New Plymouth. Rewi, Taonui, and their families go to the Star Pantomime Company to-night, and leave by train for Waitara m the morning. Mr Sheehan is likely to be here till Friday. Rewi and other natives were invited by Mr Standish to his house to tea, where they went, and from there proceeded to the theatre. TARANAKI RACES ACCEPTANCES.
