The control of Alexandria remains with England. LONDON, October 18. When addressing a public political meeting at Southport, the Bight Hon. R. A. Cross, Secretary for the Home Department, said that the Government did not desire to exte-id its Indian northern frontier, and that if the Afghans maintained an attitude of strength and independence, friendly relations might possibly result from mutual explanations, but that, whatever might be the result, the Government were determined, at any cost, to maintain British supremacy and power. LONDON, October 20.
The report in reference to the Glasgow Jjtnk gives an estimated loss of £5,191,000, including the capital reserve fund. The examiners shew that the acounte have been falsified, securities entered at fictitious values; bad debts treated as good assets ; gold, covering excessive note issues, squandered, and the Government deceived by false returns, and the shareholders by cooked balance-sheets. Among the colonial securities pledged are Poveray Bay (New Zealand.) New South Wales, and Queensland.

It is stated Parliament will be prorogued to-morrow, by I commission. Sir Robert Douglas moved the second reading of the Hamlin Land Grant Bill, urging the claims of soldiers who had shed their blood in the defence of the country. He asked whether any member of the House would agree to sell his life for £2,000. The second reading was carried on the voices. The Native Minister promised that the amount asked imder the Bill should be included in future estimates. Sir R. Douglas declined to proceed further with the Bill. In Committee on the Rating Act Ammendment Act, Mr Reeves moved a new clause, giving power to local bodies to levy rates for the support of fire bregades, and waterworks. It was negatived, and the Bill was reported without amend- ! inent.
