PURE-BRED DEVON CATTLE FOR NEW ZEALAND.
(• Sydney Mail,' October 6, 1878.) * The finest lot of pure-bred Devons ■which have as yet left this port, were dispatched by the Hero (s.) on Wednesday, for Auckland. They came from* the celebrated Tooal herd, and were selected by Mr W. Payne, who purchased for the firm ot Messrs McLean ' & Co., of Waikato, the breeders who, it may be remembered, Bent over the champion shorthorn bulls m April, to compete on Alfred Park. This shipment of hardy reds consisted of twenty-one head of young females, everyone fitted for a show-ground, as a pure representative of the Devon breed, and one two-year-old bull. ' The heifers are by the well-known grand bulls Duke of Flitton 4th and Emigrant, both imported bulls, which came to this colony with first-class characters aud undeniably good pedigrees that have been borno ouh by the service rendered siuce their arrival, and Dufeo of Devon, by Emigrant from Ellen (imported). There is a list of firsi-class prizes attached to these balls, whicb, iii this case, it is unnecessary to publish. The Tooal herd is so well-known, aud the name Reynold >-* so often inscribed m cups, that the " C.R." Devons should pass current m any part of the world. Tho male of the lot is Baronet, a fine specimen of the Devon breed, which carried off first honours m Maitland m 1877, and repeated the same feat at Singleton this year. We are informed that Messrs McLean and Co. intend this interresting collection to be the foundation of a Devon herd, and, if such is their purpose, we can but observe that they have selected first-class materials.
