THE HAMILTON CRICKET CLUB.

A. meeting of the abov& Clab wan held at the Royal Hotel on Friday last, the 11th instant, sit 8 p.m. Mr A. O. Field occupied the chair. Mr Henry Steele requested permission to detain the members a few minutes previous to proceeding to business. The following appropriate speech was then delivered by him, at the same time presenting a bat to Mr James Wood : — " I have been requested by the membei-H of the late Kirikiriroa Cricket Club to present you with this bat as a small token of our admiratiou of your good qualitieß both as a cricketer and a gentleman. Since you came among 1 us, you have worked hard to re-organiso our Cricket Olub, and I feel sure that, had you not done so, there would have been no Cricket Club m Hamilton .East to-day. You have given the greatest satisfaction aa our Captain, and, by your courteous manner and strict impartiality, you have won the respect and esteem of every Club with whom we have played. You have shown m a remarkable degree that spirit of fairness and uprightness which is essential to a good cricketer and a pleasant neighbor. During the time you have been Captain of the Kirikiriroa Cricket Club, there has not been a single complaint of carelessness, partiality, or incompetence. We have not forgotten how nobly you acquitted yourself when you, being the only Waikato representative against the Australian eleven, topped the score, and won for yourself and Waikato a name which will not be easily forgotten. As Captain of our Football Clvb — and, m fact, m every position Co which you have been elected — you have proved yourself well worthy of the trust reposed m you. In almost every branch of althletics, you have distinguished yourself for smartness, pluck, endurance, skill, . and a desire to see everybody have fair play, if this bat were made of gold, it would not be a sufficient expression of our esteem for good qualicies as a Captain, a friend, a neighbor, a thorough sportsman, and a jolly g-ood fellow." — Loud and continued applause.
