Mr Fox is to move to-morrow that a select committee be appointed to inquire into the circumstances under which Messrs W. Mair and W. IST. Searancke have been require! to retire from the public servicej'aud why interpreters' licenses have been puspendcd m the cases of Messrs Charles 0. Davis and J. Grendell. The committee to consist of Mr Ormond, the Hon Mr Gisborne, Major Atkinson, Mr Seaton, Mr Williams, Mr Wallace, Mr Rolleston, the Hon Macandrew, Captain Morris and the mover, with power to call for persons and papers, five to be the quorum, to report m three weeks. Fiuday, 10 p. jr. A strong debate has arisen on his motion to go into Committee of Supply. Mr Woolcock opened the ball m a long speech, concluding" with a motion to the effect that the clause of the Financial Arrangements A.ct by which counties receive twenty per cent of the land, he repealed. Mr Whitaker has given notice that if this be carried he will move that the s;>il twenty per cent, of Land Fund shall bo appropriate 1
to the construction of roads and bridges throughout the colony. The Hon. Mr Sheehan's speech was a hot-hp.aded iiftiick on the Opposition, and wound up with an expression of opinion that, if the 'Government party stick together, they could afford to allow a number of sheep m wolves 1 clothing to go about the lobbies seeking whom they might devour. He also characterised the "Opposition as a sickly division. Mr Ormond made. a. vigorous .reply m which he twitted the Premier for the abandonment of every item of his vaunted policy, instead of being consistent which they could respect, Mr Ormond said they had nothing but a party divided against itself, and supporters who only pulled their measoros to tattorj The Hon. Mr Sheehan rend the following telegram m the Hause tonight : "We have arrived here, and are carrying out the law m respect of this trouble. T agree to the exhumation of the body. I cou'H not object, because it was necessary to find out this trouble as to whether it was a murder or otherwise, m accordance with your great work's, Major Ropata. • ■■
