to call tli is meeting- »o disenss the idea of a railway to Hamilton East. He had seen by the paper that Hamilton people were endeavoring to get a tramway across the river. Ho thought a I ram way wonld be perfectly useless to the sellers of Cambridge, Tamahere, Kirikiriroa and Pi^ko. What they wanted was }i tailway which would take their cattle away to Auckland. They could now get their cattle taken down from Ohaup;i at 10s a head, if if Lliey co"ld get them taken for 5a it would be a great boon. But driving- them to Ohaupo was inconvenient. If they had to drive their cattle all the^way to Auckland it would depreoiafi^ their value to the extent of 40s to 50s a. he.id. He did not thtuk a tramway would suit the requirements of this district. What they wanted was a railway nfc Hamilton East that they could put their stock on the trucks their and have them taken down by rail to Auckland without any further trouble. ! A considerable amount of discussion here ensued m the course of which Captain McPhcison pointed out that the. tramway was no trumpery affair, it would be able to carry a contractors engine and also a truck load of cattle. It was thought by some that if they get this tramway they might have long to wait for the railway. But m consideration of tha truth of the old adage, " A bird m the hand is worth two m the bush." The following resolutions were carried. 1. " That the members of the Club present having heard the explanation of the gentlemen from Hamilton, who assure them thattho contemplated tramway would have facilities for cairying stock as well as passengers have great pleasure m supporting it. 2. That the managing Committee of the Club draft a memorial to ths Government shewing the amount of support this district; would be likely to contribute to the railway if a tramway were brought from the present; railway into Hamilton East." The subject of the Thames and Waikato Railway was also discussed at some length when the following resolution was carried •' That the managing Committee of the Club write 10 the members for Waikato and Waipa asking them what steps had been taken with regard to the Thames and Waikato Railway, and requesting them to urge the Government to complete arrangements by which the Una could be commenced as soon as possible. This was all the business..
