CAMBRIDGE HIGHWAY DISTRICT MEETING.
The Annual Meeting of the ratepayers of the Cambridge Highway District was held afc che National Hotel on Friday. A large uuraber of ratepayers were present, and unusual interest seemed to be taken m the proceedings. Mr A. A. Fanfchani having been voted to the chair, read the advertisement convening the meeting, and then called upon Mr James Runeinian Chairman of the outgoing Board of Trustees to bring up the report and financial statement. Mr Runcimau requested the Secretary to read the report. trustees' eeportIn bringing the balance-sheet before the ratepayers, your Trustees
beg to remind you that this Board began the yearV work m debt to the amount of £69 9s 3d. which has been absorbed m the present statement. Your Trustees m order to meet this and other immediate works, arranged with the Bank of New Zealand to advance such monies as would be required, on personal security. The main road has been metalled for the distance of 2 miles and a quarter, and is at the present time m passable order, considering the season. The next w£rk of importance which has been executed, is the Cambridge and Piako Road. This lias been partly formed for three mile 3 and a half under considerable and various difficulties, through the natives demanding a larger sum of money, than was at firat anticipated, before they would admit, of certain eel nets boiusf removed, which the Engineer found absolutely necessary to allow the formation of the road m. the last mile of the work. At first they demanded ,£IOO, but it was ultimately arranged that they would remove all objections and consent *,o the necessary requirements for the sum of £G0 to wtfich your Tt ustees agreed. It. was then arranged with Messrs Maclean & Co. for that firm to subsidise this Board, for the purpose of making an outlet drain, which would be a mutual benefit to both parties and to which work they contributed thesum ot £94 15.5, they nlso contributed 7a per chain, for 96£ chains of formation of the first part of the road, which amounted to £33 1 5s 6J. The Board also had the advantage of about 30 chains of diaius previously made by them, along (he line of road. The Bjard then obtained a gran i. from the Waikato County County towards this work amounting to £22, a part of which sum only has been expended by the Board on this w irk leaving a balance of the different subsidies to that road of £131 13s lOd at the bank. You will observe by the balance-shett that a considerable amount of bridging, road clearing, and other repairs have been executed, which, together with the incidental expenses fur commission and general expenses of the Board, brings the total expenditure for the year to £84:8 lus 61. In conclusion, your trustees will be glad to render explanation as to any of the items appearing m the accounts, which have been expended to the best of their judgment. — James Runcimax, Chairman.
