BOROUGH ENGINEERING.

g IB , — I nave f or seme short time past noticed the "improvements" which are being made m some of our streets by the Council, or rather by their employees,— and as one who has to pay his share of the rates, I must say that I object to the waste of money that has of late taken place. Are the Council doing the work themselves, or is their engineer conducting operations ? For his own sake and credit, I sincerely hope not. As an instance of what is being done, look at the main thoroughfare between Whyte's buildings and Sandes & Co.'s, or the Telegraph Station. Here, last week, a dray was employed carting gravel to cover up the sea of mud oq the west side of the street, and as soon as that was done the foreman of works and two other men were set to work to take it all up again, and a dray and man employed to cart all the mud nd a great deal of the gravel (which, I believe, costs about Is 8d par yard) away off the street; after which another carting of gravel had to take place to cover the road again. Other instances of waste of money might be mentioned, and will bo, too, if things are not changed. Why, I should like to know, do the Council (or is it His Worship) attempt to form a street permanently before they have the levels taken ? Such things should not be. There are plenty of useful works about the borough that might be done : Such as making new roads or gravelling those already formed, more especially on the east side of the river ; but it strikes me that those having authority seem to like to keep the foreman and his assistants constantly m view of the public, just to show that something " is " being done. Messieurs the Mayors and Councillors of Hamilton, mind what you are J doing with the funds of the ratepayers ! A day of reckoning will surely come, and you will be required to give an account of your stewardship. Amateur engineering is not your forte.— l am &c, Watchdog. Hamilton: July 29, 1878.
