Cambridge Ploughing Match. The Committee invite tenders, which -will he received until Saturday next, from persons •willing to purchase the right to erect one refreshment booth on the field on the day of the ploughing match—the 11th inst. Taxjpari road metal may, we learn,, be quarried in quantities at a cost of Is 6d per yard. The cost of carriage at Id per mil* is Is 4d per yard, so that we are within the mark in estimating that the Borough Council may procure the metal at the Hamiton station, at a cost not exceeding 3s per yard.

The late Melancholy Death at Cambridge.—An inquest was held on Tuesday before a respectable jury, of whom Mr S. Bright was foreman, on the body of the late Mr Laurence O'Brien, when the following verdict was returned:—" That the deceased died on Ist July, 1878, at Cambridge, while in a state of unsound mind, destroyed himself with strychnine." The fallow deer lately turned out by Mr Firth, at Mangakawa, have reached Pukerimu, where they are doing considerable damage to the oak and elm trees on Mr Reynolds' farm at Pnkekura. Three of them are constantly there hopping over the wirefences with ease. MiReynolds says they are doing as much damage as the hares. Other fanners of Pukerimu are also complaining. as the Borough's share of the £2,222 coming 1 , to the County of Waipa from the £40,000 grant; also, from Messrs Sargood, Sons, and Ewen, asking (without prejudice) what compensation the Council were disposed to offer for the loss sustained by them in the late punt accident, by which goods were damaged to the extent of £74 la lid; also, a letter from Mr WCununing, on behalf of the 79 petitioners for the fixing the site of the bridge higher; up the river, stating that iVIr 'ErriugtorT was engaged in surveying the newljcproposcd site, and asking that the Council would defer consideration of the prayer of the petition until the next meeting of the Council; also, a petition from a number of ratepayers, calling the-attention of the Council to the state of the road leading from Victoria-street, and passing through Messrs Mahon s and Hyde's properties, the cost of repairing which would not exceed £5. The Council referred the last matter to the Works Committee with instructions to carry it out. The consideration of Messrs Sargood, Sous, and Ewen's letter was deferred, pending the obtaining legal advice on the matter. The consideration of the petition respecting -the new survey for a bridge site was ordered to stand over to the next meeting on Monday evening, the Bth instant.. The Clerk was instructed to ascertain the cost of road metal at Taupiri, and of getting it to the Hamilton Station.
