HARAPEPE.

■...,;; ... May 24. A public meeting of the inhabitants Tof the, Pirongia district was held on Thursday last, in the school" house,, Harapepe. The meeting was -fairly attended by the principal settlers of the district. Mr James Sherretfc was elected .chairman.. TII9 Chairman said the meeting "had been, called to take the opinion, of the inhabitants of the district on the proposed bringing the Couuties Act into operation iu the Raglan County.. A very short notice had b&en given, as it was only within the last few days that any one. in the district had been aware that it wes the intention of the Raglan Council to try and bring it into force. Mr A. S. Sherrett, who is one of the Councillors for the district, said he 1 was "debidedly against it being brought in; .at present the Council ivas uofc fall, as there were only flye nstsado of.; sey.e_iv Councillors, au4 wo Ridings were not represented it all. present; ; Council wquld. ;q. out of office, in KoVembev, and ie thought ■ it ' would be prematare o bring the A6t in at present, and hat he gould not see that it svcmld.

do the slightest good to tbe district. MrW. Livinpsl on proposed that a deputation from the meeting vroit on Mr McMinu, oiu\other;Cpuucilloi-, whVwas not present, and request him to vote with Mr Sherretb against the bringing in of the Act, and that if he refuse to do so, to request him to rosign his seat 111 the Council, as ho did not represent his constituents. Mr D. Rollo seconded the resolu- \ tion. j ' : i / ' • ■' ' : The above resolution being put to tbe meeting was carried theVe being only two against it. At this atage o£ the meeting Mr McMinn came in, and on the resolu- , tion being read over to him he said that he-had promised 'the Chairman of the Council to' Vote •in fa%'or of it being brought iri,'^ He could only promise .the meeting to abstain from' Voting on either side. The object of bringing in the Act was to enable the Council to take the management of the Raglan Road Works, and that Sir Grey and Mr Sheehan had wished the Council <o do so. . '■".,,. . Mr A. & Sherrett here said that when he waited on Sir G. Grey as a deputation of the Council, Sir George ;he distinctly stated' that it was the intention of th,e Government to mate the R^glian ItoaC independent 1 of County v Cpnnoiis or Road Boards, and that he hoped to see it made as far as Kawhia. If this was the /case the Raglan County Council had not the slightest need to trouble their heads about it, . Mr Jtayid Rollo s ated that there were three Road Boards in Raglan, ,^nd that they should look after their own" affairs, as it was more their concern than ours/ Mr R. N>il said that no one had any objection to the Councillors working for the Raglan road night and day 5 ' if they liked to do so, but the general opinion of this district was againtt the County Act being brought in, as the Road Board had been found quite capable of doing all that was wanted. There was a great deal of deslu- • to'ry conversation 'on the matter, and the meeting broke up. We have been getting some very severe frosts this last week, and the grass is not improved by them. Whooping coagh is still' prevalent amongst the children in this district. — Own Cokrespondent,
