WAATAWHATA.

In a short time we shall have a good road from Whatawhata' to Ngaruawahia, but we cannot say the same of the Alexandra side. Instead of any improvement this road has been gradually getting worse, and threatens to become quite impassible. One point — especially about a mile from the township — needs immediate attention. At this place a swamp crosses the road, and the trafic has always been over private property, but the land is being fenced in, as well as having been drained into this swamp, so "that a culvert or something is wanted at once to make the road even passible for horses, and more than this it would be presumption on our part to expect. Our school house is rapidly approaching completion, and the building when finished will add greatly to the appearance of the township, as well as aftord a sign of solid progress. I believe a concert is to take place upon the opening of tie school. It id to be hoped so, as there is plenty of talent in the district, and lots that Jrtan be imported. We are at last to i*ve what we might have had years ago, a quarterly cattle sale. The subject has been mooted for a considerable time, but is now likely to be carried out. The position of Whatawhata for sale of stock is unrivalled, being, as it is, the central point between Alexandra and Ngaruawahia, and at the junction of the Raglao, Harapipi and Kirikiriki roads, it occupies a most suitable position for collecting stock, and when sold, the cattle being in the delta, could be delivered in any part of the Waikato with little risk or expense. All the danger of losing cattle in the ranges, which attends those who buy in Raglan, would be done away with, and the stock would fetch the market price, instead of leaving a large margin for probable loss put upon them. Mr Buckland will sell, and that will be sufficient to cause a number of buyers and sellers to gather at the yard. — Correspondent. March 9th, 1878.
