That the composition of the Eduction Board is a matter of consequence to the public at large, and may become very specially so m individual cases, wa , not so very long- ago, instanced m that of the Hamilton E»st Committee, and it is therefore all the mote advisable that local committees should not neglect to exercise the privi'ege accorded them by the Education Act of 187? — that of electing the membeis of tin 150ar.1. The list of nominated candidates is now before them from which to choose the nine members of the new Education Board. As published m our issue of Saturday, it contained no less than 46 candidates. It will now be for the several School Committees to send m tc the Central Board, before the 28th instant, nine names from the above list as, m their opinion, the most desirable for election. Of all names sunt m from the various local committees the nine having the most voces will be elected.
The several school committees are, b. the 70th ciause of the Act, enj lined to do all things decently and m o.'dßr, ami to make their action m thin, as m othei cases, legal the meeting at which these names will be chosen must be convened by the chairman or at the n qiest of cwo or mure members of the committee, and three shall form a quorum at such meeting. The lists of names mast lie sent m so as io reach the Education Board m Auckland, at the latest, on the 28th inst.
A fuitber no'ificttion has bt>en niacta m our issue of <o-day m re feivnce to the time and place at wbi<*h the first meetings of ratep*^
ers, under the new Education Act Of .1877, will be held for the election of- school committees. Too much apathy m general is shown to this matter, yet the office should be one which men of education and position should noi depra unworthy of them. They it is, indeed, wno should take a leading part m educational matters, and not — as is too often the case— leave the blind to be led by the blind. The electious will take place, at the meetiugs now convened by the Board, by ballot, and, as seven comniittee-meu will be elected, each householder wi 1 ha..ye seven votes, and amy give them <*ll to one candidate or distribute them among the seven — as he thinks fit. The dates and places of the various meetings of householders for the election of school committees m the various school districts m Waikato were advertised m last Saturdays paper.
