(PKOJt A COKRESPONDRNT.) September 27,1877. Last evening witoesaed one of those social gathering which so greatly tend to promote kindly feeling and friendly interest amongst settlers so scattered as in a district as this. Mr J. WojJ, of the Nottingham Castle Hotel, gave a dinner to inaugurate the opening of bis hotel in Ja!y last. A description of this large tnd comodious hostelry baa ulready appeared in your column*. At 6.30 pm over 60 persona, out of the many who had been invited, B;it down to an txcdlent repust, presided over by M»jor Q-corge, J.tf, tne vice ch ir being hued by the worthy host. The dinner com. prised many delicacies of the season, was wsll cooked, and was laid on the table iu a clean and tasteful uiauner. It is but justice to say it would have done credit; to any hostelry in a larger township, or even in Auckland itself. The health of, and sucoess to, the host and drunk in bumpers, with musical uo>iiyrs, and suitably responded to. After- the dinner, dancing was <.-o:nmenced and was carried on with unllaggging z =al till " the dawn of day, wheu the company separated, all expressing ibein* veives as having spent au enjoyable eveuiag, one to be long recneinoeied. The residents of this locality seem decermined to adopt as tneir motto, '' Idvanoe." I have seen a petition lying for signature for telegraphic office aud tri-weekly post. Jtotn a<e urgently iequired in the interests and rising importance of this locality. Government shoutd see that itg tine policy lies in bein 4 in the van, not the rear of the settlement and progress of its outlying districts. —FitOM A CORRBSPONDJSNT.

conns by the Saturdayjotie ..; The school* master that is to be here, I heat, is a Mr Leggett, dow an under-master in Auckland. There were a good many applications for the situation, and times must be very bad amongst educated men in New Zealand, or m this province, when so many apply for each a berth. The Bohoolhou»e is m>w finished, but not yet handed over to the committee. I Bhould suggest to the latter that, to inaugrate the open : ing of it, they invite the clergyman of the district to hold a service in it. and have tea meeting after. '<■■ Tne weather tor the past week has been very fine, but cold at night, and the grass is cotuiug 6a but slowly. .This morning there was quite a sharp frost.—Own CORKESPONDKNT.
