A * Herald ' special says that it is reported th,au Sulieraan Pasha has effected a junction with Mehernet Ali, whose combined forces are expected to attack the Czare witch, at Biela, The Russian staff has been censured for refusing reinforcements to Skobeloff, whose division was nearly annihilated. The total loss at Plevna was 13,000 Russians, and 3000 Roumanians. The Roumanians have captured Bilek. MEHEMET ALI ADVANCING. ON THE RUSSIANS. THE PORTE REFUSES MEDIATION. Bombay, September 21. The «Daily News' correspondent says that the attack on Plevna has been abandoned. A Turkish official despatch reports that Mehemet Ali is slowly advancing on the right bank of the Banikolem towards Kopritza, twelve miles south-east of Biela, where the Russians are massing their forces. New 3 from Stamboul states that the Porte refuses mediation whilst a single Russian remains inTurkey. The Porte will refuse an armistice unless concurrent with peace j. roposals. LATER. The blocka le and bombarding of Plevna continues. A report from a reliable source says that the interview at Salzourg is a sequel to the meeting at Ischl. Jt is to strengthen the compete understanding between the three Emperors.
REPORTED VICTORY BY Bomb.vy, September 22. It is reported that Mehemet Al* has gaiued a complete victory at Biela, which has been accompanied with a great Russian loss. THE CONFERENCE AT SALZBJRG. London, September 20. Prince Bismarck and Count Andrassy conferred together for four hours.
A semi • official correspondence, published at Berlin, indicates that the object of the conference is to consider what steps could be taken towards restoring peace.
THE INTERNATIONAL RIFLE MATCH AT CREEDMOOR.— THE BRITISH BEAT THE AMERICANS. London, September 20. The total points made at the International Rifle March, at Creedmoor, were : —Americans, 3034 ; British, 3242. Majority for the British team, 208.
THE CftEEDMOOR iUFLE MATCH. The result of the International Rifle Match at Creedmoor, as first telegraphed, is wroug. The following is correct:—American team, 3334; British team, 3242. [SPECIAL TELEGRAM TO THE ' SYDNEY MORNING HERALLV] THE BOMBARDMENT OF PLEVNA. London, September 13. The bombardment of Plevna commenced at dawn on Friday, the 7th instant, the Russian troops being everywhere in position, with storming parties ready on the extreme left. The corps under General Skobeloff and General Simnitzky formed the centre division ; General Krudener's troops formed the right wing; whilst General Zoloff, with the Roumanian divisions, formed the semicircle of investment. The artillery fire was dull throughout Friday and Saturday, and produced little result. On Saturday night the Russians advanced a heavy battery nearer Plevna, the bombardment never ceasing all Sunday. A Turkish sortie against the Russian left was repulsed with heavy loss. On Monday, General Skobeloff captured the Southern height co'umtmding Plevna, logether with the whole fortifidd encampment, which is described as being enormously strong, A general assault was inteaded to be made o.i Sunday or Monday, but was deferred until the Turkish fire had been subdued at the Grivieka redoubt, which occupied the centre position. The cannonade lasted six days from south and north-east. RELIEF OF PLEVNA. A Russian despatch dated 25th, says, Mehemet Ali unsuccessfully attacked the Russians at Cherknova, on the Jantra, on the 21st, reaching their entrenchments, but was compelled to fall back, his supports failing. A Turkish official despatch says that, a convoy of 5000 men entered Plevna. A Scotland Vard deteotive is committed for trial in connection with the recent turf swindle of £IO,OOO on the Countess.
