Thursday, 11.30 a m. The Lunatic Asylum at the Whau was burned down th l s morning. The fire originated, m a wooden addition at the rear. A female inmate asserts s-ie set fire to it because she was compelled to sleep m a compartment with a Maori. The left wing is totally destroyed and the upper p.-irb of ihe cen re. The right wing is saved through the exertions of the fire brigade. One female inmate, Mm Forrune, w-ia burucd to death, and another saved wi.h great difficulty from a window. The inmaies behaved very well, and were removed to the Auckland Hospital and Immigration Barracks.
