On the night of Tuesday (the 1 lth September) the Avalanche, bound for Wellirijfton, whonoißf Portland, was struck amidships by the Ame- - rican ship Forest, and sunk in three minutes. Sixty-three possengers, chiefly returning colonists, were all drowned. 'Of tterty*four seamen three were -saved, including the third officer. Of 'the crew of the Forest, twenty-one In number, nine were saved. The bodies are being washed ashore. Among the list are whole families. There are eight Wilkins, six Lees, and four Chamberlains.
