ALEXANDRA.

September 3rd.These has been but little ' stiring amongst the natives since the, last, meeting ,at Hikurangi. A good number have .gone there these last few daya to plant potatoes! ■ Tawhiao intending to have £ » large quantity planted there $f The Karakariki aatives with Barton have arrived at jEaipiha, and leave, to. day to commence permanent (settlement on the block of land between Kopua and Kaipiha, whioh has been alluted to them by Tawhiao;

We are all much surprised here at : a letter which appeared m your Saturday's issue; signed uader the norn deplume of "Pro Bono Publico," complaining of drunkenness and rowdyism amongst natives visiting Alexandra. A more mendacious statement I never saw m print, and one, if not contradio^ed, oaloulated to do great injury to the settlement, by the wromg impression it might make on any new intending settler. For the last eighteen months there has been compariti vely no drinking among the King natives, they beiug steadfastly against it. None of the thefts, &o, thut nave been reported from here for some time past have been oausod by intoxication. Our town constable here, Mr •HoLeoJ, is most indefatigable, aud had any natives been seen "rolling about chreatuing, toe," they' would have been very soon "run m" by him. JBVom the whule tenor of the letter, one m fact, would imagine it was intended as a stab at that officer, . from some ■ one s.nmbigg under the recollection of some ~pergbnat unpleasantness, caused by that functio* uarie'd increasing vigilance. Mr J Hill, storekeeper here, who has beeniadentified with the settlement ever since its foundation, is to general regret, about leaving us, for the- purpose of establishing a wholesale buaiuesa m your more populous township; Mr Hill has always taken a warm interest m all mattars public or private, calculated to advance the prosperity of the district, and from his geniality of disposition will leave behind him a whole host of . friends, and take with him their best wishes for bis future prosperity m his new home and undertaking. Connected with the above, the publio and Government will lose the services of the moss oourteous and obliging officer that ever held the position of Post-master and Telegraphist m Alexandra, Mr V .Roberta, who has by his complaisance and attention to his duties, won ihe well deserved reapect of the whole community. Mr Roberts, m conjunction with Mr F Lacon have purchased the business of Mr J D Hill, and will, doubtless, be well supported .by their numerous friends and well, wishers, —Own Corbhspondsni.
