The Paris correspondent of the ' Sjd" ney Morning 'Herald ' writes :—A. curious wager has just been lost. One of the bettors had asked the other at what moment the nineteenth century commenced ? •Oh !' repliedthe latter, 'why, of course, it began on the Ist January, 1800.' 'Not at oil/ cried the querist. The two therefore luid a wager on their respective opinions, and the second party has lost. In fuofc the century in question only begins on the Ist January, 1801. To constitute a complete century a hundred years must have elapsed. The first century of the Christian era not having finished until t*»e end of the 31st December of the hundredth year at midnight, the second ceuturj only commenced on the Ist January, 101, to end at midnight on the 31st December, 200; and so on. Consequently the nineteenth century will terminate on the 31st December, 1900*
