GREAT SOUTH ROAD. In accordance with a resolution passed it last meeting the Chairman brought up a draft of a memorial to the House of Representatives relative to the hardships suffered by the county in having the Great South -JR. »ad, between Whaiigaw rnarino and Taupari, thrown upon*its oharge, with all the bridges (one exceptetl.) in an utterly rotten state. The petition, or .memorial srates that the district generally is poor land, and taxed to the extent of five per cent on, its rateable value, but only producing some twenty-five or thirty pounds.- .revenue. That a large portion of the lands are unsold, and the traffic on the road insufficient to pay for the establishment of a toll. The House is therefore requested to place on the estimates . a sum sufficient, to re-construct the bridges, when the' couuty will undertake to maintain them. The draft was approved by the Council, and the Chairman waa authorised to have a fair copy prepared, and to sign and forward it as early as possible. engineer's report. The Chairman laid on the table a report by the Engiueer, Mr Reed, accompanied by a rough tracing of the- road required to give an outlet t) the settlers at Wairangi, near Rangiriri. Ib appeara that the surveyor's road is almost impracticable, and that a deviation through nearly half a mile ot swamp is necessary. Reed, of Hamilton, £98 10s ; Mr Wells, of Ngaruawahia, £110. The plan and specifications weie minutely, examined by the Council, and they came to the conclusion that, as the work required might be considered as of a temporary character, a landing of a less substantial and expensive kind would answer the purpose.
