PUKEKURA HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
Thb annual meeting of ratepayers of the Pukekura Highway District, was held at the School-room, Pukekrimo, on Monday the 9th July,! at 2 p.m. A considerable number of ratepayers having assembled at that hour. Mr Edward Lake was voted to the chair. After reading the advertisement oalting the meeting, Mr Lake called on the Chairman of the outgoing board to read the statement of accounts for the previous year. This was done, shewing the receipts to be £785 5s Id, as'follow* : Receipts: Government grants, Ist installment, £4B 3d 4d ; 2id installment., £96 6s 8d ; share of subsidy, £469 7s 5.1; rates collected, £5Ol 4? 11; dog collars, £8 ss; balance from last y«ar, £4l 8s sd. The expenditure was £576 9s 51, leaving a balance in hand of £BB 16s 4d. The auditors having certified that they had; examined the books and vouchers, and found the same to be correct
s On the motion of Mr John McGataie, seoonded by Mr D Oaley senr., the statement of accounts as read was adopted It was proposed by Mr D Caley, and seoonded by Mr J Grme that the trustees be recomende i to leavy a rate of 9i in the £ for !}he incoming year. A.u amendment was proponed by Mr Fleming, and seconded by Mr Turner, that the trustees levy a rate of Is in the £ payable in one instalment. The ammendment was carried.
Twelve gentlemen having been proposed as trustees, Messrs Gaue, Scott, Parr, Fisher, and Battle declined to stand. A ballot Having' been taken, Messrs Edward Lak.e W Reynolds, Richard Parker, E B Walker, and Francis Hicks were elected.' Mr P Cooper made a suggestion for the consideration of the framers of any new rating Act that all unoccupied land be made to pay|a double rate, which met the approval of' many of the ratepayers. Ou the motion of Mr John Fisher, seconded by Mr E B Walker.-Messrs S Fleming and J Gane ware re-elected auditors.
On the motion of Mr J Fisher, seconded by Mr J McCathie. Messrs Hart Hicks, and W Scott were appointed fence-viewers.
On the motion of Mr J Crane, seconded by Mr H J Turner, a cordial vote of thanks was passed unanimously to the outgoing board for their courtesy in not striking a rate without consulting the ratepayers It was proposed by Mr Gane, and seconded by Mr W Scott that a vote of thanks be given to the Seer tary. The usual vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the maeting
