Wellington, Tuesday IMMIGRATION ARRANGEMENTS The' following instructions regarding the immigration, arrangements for the current year hare been sent to the AgentGeneral. He is to send out 5,000 immigrants altogether, the distribution of them to be a* follows : — Auckland, 400 j T«anaki,ilOO ; Wellington, 400 ; Napier, 400 j Otago, 1,700, including aboat 350 for Invercargill ; Canterbury, 1,700 ; Nelson, 100 ; Blenheim, 100 ; and Westland, 100. Cn e&ch case there is to be as large a proportion as possible of single women, the balance being ploughmen, farm labourers, shepherds, bricklayers, and carpenters. He is not to send any large families of young children, unless these are nominated The first ships should arrive in October, and none after February. Nominated immigrants are to be preferred. A portion of the above will be sent from the Clyde, as formerly ; but the total number for the year is not to exceed the 5,000. Christohuroh, Tuesday AGITATION AGAUVST IHE RAILWAY TARIFF. The agitation against the new railway tariff is rapidly increasing. The passenger traffic is, according to newspaper report, decreasing, while wagons on public roads and coastal steamers are starling to run an opposition to the railway for goods traffic. Three public meetings of merchants and agriculturists are called for this week, to consider and protest against the tariff. Dunkdin, Tuesday A COOKERS" SCHOOL. A cookery school is about to be opened here by MiS3 Tidier, of Adelaide. . Addresses were delivered in connection with it on 3aturday afternoon by Dr Coughtrey and Mr Eathgate.
