RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Hamilton, Saturday, July 7th. (Before W IST Searancke, Esq, B, M.) VAGBA.NCY John Curley was charged with a breach of the Vagraut Ace, 1866, and pleaded guilty. Sergeant McQ-overn said, the prisoner was aa old offender, aad had been up a few d»ys ago; Sentenced to seven days imprisonment, with hard labour, m Newcastle Q-aol. Monday, July 9rs (Before 00l Lyon, J P, and E W Hammond, E3q, J P.) FOWL STEALING. Thomas Hornbrook was charged, by Constable Murray, with stealing a fowl, value two shillings, on last Saturday night, at Hamilton East, the fowl beiDg the property of Captain Dawson. On the charge being read over, the prisoner pleaded he had taken the fowl, but did not B teal it. It. waa'his dog which had taken it. Sergeant McGrovern, who prosecuted, said this was tantamount to a plea of nut guilty, but, tnao he should be able tv prove to the Bench that the prisoner had no dog with him at the time the offence was committed. Two witnesses ware examined, Mr Mark Vivian and Mounted Couostable Wild, the former witness proved that he saw the prisoner jtake the fowl off the tence where it was roostiag, and that he, witness, followed him to his honse. This witness ia reply to Sergeant McGrovern declared positively that prisoner had no dog with him. Constable Wild proved the finding the fowl m prisoner's house. Sergeant MoGrovern said he hid two other witnesses, Captaiu D^vvaou ami Constable Murray. Tha Court considered it was unnecessary after hearing the evidence and tho prisoners plea to go any f urcher into the matter.
