SPECIAL TELEGRAMS,
[Press Agency,] Auckland, last night. The Hero is coming up Harbour THE AUCKLAND RACES. (From our Sporting Correspondent, •Vates.') The weather threatens a very heavy course on the race day, and surprises are not unlikely to happen. Ariel is looked to as a certainty for the Handicap, but all the others are sure starters, and Shanneen, who acts well in dirt, will have a great chance for the Steeplechase. Butcher Boy and are favourites, and Connaught Hanger and Buckstone are backed at shortening prices. Butcher Boy is iu splendid condition, but if Perfume keeps on her feet, she will beat him for speed, and I prefer her chance with Buckstone as cockboat. In the Hurdle Race Batcher Boy is let in on favourable terms with list lib. Perfume, with 12st, is not likely to accept. Shanneen, 9st slb, and Buckstone 9st 121b, have good chances, but Butcher Boy ought to win. The Tradesman's Handicap has seven entries, and should be. a good thing for Perfume with Bst 61b, unless Izaak "Walton, 7st 4lb, should chose to go straight. The Champagne Stakes will produce a good struggle between Venus Transit, Queen Mab,'and Longlands. The first has been tried better than Izaak Walton at level weights, and will win. She should also be handy in the Flying Stakes, in which eleven are entered. " Several bookmakers have arrived from the South, and betting •is spirited. Betting on the Birthday Handicap is : Even against Ariel ; 6 to. 4 against Bide-a-wee ; sto 2 against Elsa ; 5 to 1 against Shauuesii. Steeplechase : 2 to 1 against Butcher Boy ; 3to 1 against Perfume ; 4 to 1 against Shaughraua 5 4to 1 against Counaught Eauger ; 6 to 1 against the others. Champagne Stakes : 6 to 4 on the field.
