Bombay, May 9.
Mr Gladstone's unexpected withdrawal of the obnoxious portion of his resolution caused a scene of tumult and confusion in the House of Commons.
Lord Harrington, the. leader of the Opposition, accepted the remainder of the motion on behalf of the Liberal par^y.. Mr Gladstone rigorously attacked the policy of the Government.
Sir H. Drutnmond Wolff moved the rejection of the motion. Mr Cross, Secretary of State for the Home Department, said the Czar was answerable for the rupture which had taken place, but if Constantinople were not attacked, no question as to English interests would arise at present. The policy of England was to protect the Suez Canal, and English interests in Egypt, and to forbid any interference with the freedom of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus. London, May 9
The Turks at Widdin have commenced bombarding Kalafat, on the opposite bank of the Danube. The Roumanian batteries are replying to their fire.
It is reported that Germany has increased the number of her troops stationed in the conquered French provinces of Alsace and Loraine.

TIDAL WAVE.
A tidal wave, this morning, rose six feet at Russell,fsix feet at Mahu* rangi, and only nine inches in Auckland harbour. Southern telegrams also report it at all coastal ports. No damage has been done by it.
