DISMANTLING THE KIHIKIHI BARRACKS.
DuaiNathe present week workmen have been busily engaged m takiag down and removing the barrack rooms nt Kihikihi. The material is being forwarded to Cambridge to be there re-erected for the use of the force. - . ; ■_■.■■■■■■■"■ , The matter .has naturally caused both indignation and alarm amongat the Kihi-. kihi and Te Awamutu settlers, and as will be seen, a public mooting has been held, and a short but sarcastic resolution condemnatory of the action of .the Q-overn-ment passed by acclamation. As we have said elsewhere, no objection can be raised to the location of the force upon : the frontier line, bat the negleot to hold surih a position as that of Kihikihi, midway between either extreme point of the line of defence, is most reprehensible . the demolition of suoh barrack accoinmo-' dation as Kihikihi now affords, is still more so. The letter of 3lr Mandeno confirms a statement we had. previously, heard, that immediately after, the halfyearly drill, which couimancas on. the Ist proximo one troop would ; certainly » give m their arnw and that probably ihe other troop would do the same. Altogether, m the defence of the Waikato, the Government appears to have got into a very pretty muddle. :
