WHATA WHATA.

April 10.

A mnch needed work is about to be done. Our township is situated upon a flat, which is lower at the back than it is in front. The result has been that, during 1 most of the winter months a considerable lake existed, which, in addition to being unhealthy, has caused no small annoyance and discomfort to the townsfolk. This will be done away with by a drain, costing only a few pounds, which will drain the whole township. The largest half of the money has been subscribed by the residents, tlie Road Board making up the balance. It. is to be hoped that this will not meet the fate of most Whatawhata projects, but be carried out at once before the wet weather sets in. Bishop Cowie is to visit Whatawhata in a week or two, no doubt to arrange about having a church erected. It is quits time we had something -of the sort, and the B .shop will be cordially supported. I have not heard any thing further about the Raglan road, except that Mr Palmer, the Government Inspector, has expressed an opinion that a good line could be got, starting from the coal mines at Ruapuheka on the Waikato side, and coming out a few miles north of Raglan. This may be the best line in a geographical sense, but it would scarcely suit .the Raglan or Waipa settlers. * The Ohote bridge is fast approving completion. It will be a durable and substantial ; work, being built rather less upon the sand than the former structures ; but it seems scarcely fair that the expense of erecting bridges like this, in a thinly settled district, should fall upon the .ratepayers. A This bridge alone will take almost all the rates collected in one i'jtea r. The fonder js that, we can keep so expensive a, road open at. all,; perhaps, undsr the, .Counties 1 ' Act,? we might have fared better. '/ P.S. — You did not put v _riy' ! lasfe, note in.r— Correspondent. . ' [Our correspondent's last letter, if not published as hep state., has not reached, ns.rr-ED W.T.]
