BUCKLAND'S CATTLE FAIR

Mr Alfred Buckland held a very successful Cattle Fair at . the Remuera Yards on "Wednesday afternoon. The number of intending' purchasers present was unusually large, and the bidding was brisk, and at times spirited. Eight hundred animals were yardfd, and, Avith, the exception of one lot, were all sold— the majority at good prices. Three-fourths of the 800 were young cattle,- a fair proportion of which were of good quality, and highly creditable, to their breeders. A general air of contentment prevailed with buyers and sellers — the former with tbeir purchases and the latter perfectly satisfied afc the prices obtained for their stock. The principal . buyers were Mr William Kelly, of Opotiki, Messrs Pollen and Young, Mr William Innes Taylor, W F Hunt, W Young, Andrew Sinclair, John McLeod, of Raglan, R J Taylor, and JS Buculand. The prices obtained for wellbred heifers, one to. two years old, 220 of which were submitted to pnblic competition, rahged from 36s to G2s ; one lot of eighteen-months-old heifers, ten in number, were bought by Mr John McLeod for 52s 6d each. A large proportion of the steers offered brought good prices, as also did the bulls. Some of the latter, however, were disposed of very cheaply. One fine.animai was sold at £6, while another was quitted at £5. Two magnificent young pedigree bulls were put up at 80 guineas, but no bidding was made, and they wsre consequently passed. Of four bull calves by the imported Short, horn bull <- Duke of Coquet," the property of Mr Joseph May, three found purchasers, one at2i guineas, and two others afc 10 guineas each. Tliere were in the pens three pedigree bull calves, from the herd of Messrs R and E Maclean. Of these, one was sold afc 23 guineas to Mr John W Williams. Another bull, from a different herd (Reid Bros'., of Motutapu, we think) was knocked down for 13 guineas. The chief sellers of stock were Messrs J S Buckland, Frank Lawry, R Biddick, W Wills, A Willis, M Mander, G Dibble, Jas B Hay, John Johns, R J Middleton, Jas Hayr, Jas Henning, Joseph May, and R and E Maclean. Oa the whole the fair was an extremely satisfactory one, and by the number of bidders who were present shows that our farmers aro turning their attention more generally to the fattening of young stock for the butcher. A capita! spread was provided by Mr E Perkins, of the Junction Hotel.— ' Hcraltl,'
