Death ob Sub - Inspector Koas Watts. — We regret, to notice m our obituary columns the decease of tbe above gentleman, . who died on Wednesday morning, at Auckland, frjua disease of the lungs. Mr Jioas Watts was a student at Sandhurst, and held a commission m the army previously to coming to New Zealand, and serving m the Armed Constabulary, m which force, lill some short time previous to his death he held the rank of Sub-Inspector.

The news from the goldfiehh, is very encoui aging mUeed, the Moaoatalari showing to tho fure with scwc. or specimens and a quantity of debris ol louse stuff showiug gold f rotly. Among this lot was a specimen of uusuai rich ■ uess, said to coutam 500 »zs. of gold. Aa it is several years ago siuue the Auckland pubiic saw a specimen of auch a calibre, we should suggest that the oue m questiou be sent tj Auckland fur inspection. The appearance ot tne roof of ho after the large haul of specimens on Wednesday, is very rich. It is said to be equal to the besc of the Caledonian days. According to the actual measurement, Monday's operations at the batieiy show that 12600zs of retorted goid was obtained and Tuesday's work was even more profitable, therefore the outlook for the week's yield is very brnhaut, and we anticipate that at least BjoojZj. gold will be obtained, bold lands on the Thames, it has often beeu remarked, never conitj a oue, and the pretji-m &pur& is u'o exception to he rule, fur we tiud thac the JtieJ Queen is looking well ; and bne Waiteßauri Company, iv their low level, uave picked up the ruu of guld traced for 210 teet m depth. The Perueverauce Compauy, the a joining claim to tho celebrated Young i>ew Zealaud, have ai> last struck the reef, aud reports from cuat mihe state that capital gold has beeu obtained. Upon the whole we have reason to be gratified with, the goldtieids' prospeebs, which, if followed up by acbual development, will lead to a revival of an industry which hauduue much tor the prosperity of the Auckland district.
West Hamilton School. —If the children atieudiug the puulio school at Hamilton West do nob thirst after knowledge they show, we are informed, a very keen appreciation of a drink ot cold water during the present sultry weather. We have always had a lively recoluotiou of the buy iii the dame's suoool, mentioned m one of Dickena'u works, vvno went out Chat sultry afternoon and dipped his bead m a bucket of water to the euvy and aggravation of the other boys m cue scnool who saw him through the op&n.door, and can sympathise with Hamilton youngsters who would faiu wash do>vu the dry precepts of the master with a cup of cola water. But tha trustees have taken very good care that they shall have nmo. The school is on a hill top, and there is no well. But unfortunately tuere is a swamp on oue sid* of the range, aud to this the children will go. JNo»v putting aside the iutereat of ttie medical profession altogether, we protest against the children being driven to sucu a resort, and if the school committee canuot see its way to sink." a well ao present, ie should at least provide the uecejsary water lor the uae ot the children by carting occasionally a ten gallon keg to the school house.
Count* ShinpliA.sters. — A correspondoub writing to the " Herald" propose the following means for raising tue wind for local public works, which is seriously entertained and referred to by that journal : — •• Sir, — I would be obliged if you would let my light so shiug that the Assembly men and County Council men see the impropriety oi rushing into loans. Of two ways of accomplishing their object they should choose the best. It is said of a profound politician when he was told that his government could get no more money loans, he said, « Ah, well, we can do better, we can make it, and thereby gained the iudep-ndeuco of the Americau States. Now, I say a County Council Hhould not require to borrow money and pay interest; on it. Tney should be empowered to issue County Scrip, with which they could pay all their contractors and all their accounts, such scrip being a legal tender for payment of County rates. Toe County Treasurer would pay the scrip to the contractors, the contractor would pay his men and his merchant, and the men and the merchant m their turn would pay the farmer for his beef, cheese, butter &c ; and the farmer would pass them round and pay his county rates with them. The treasurers would cancel them, and after the annual audit they could be burnt m presence of the auditor — having fulfilled the mission of their being. The County gentlemen would rej >ice m a currency having the County as a security, and that Couuty the more secure that it had not to pay interest for ail the mouey it raquired for its public works, To say any more w.uld only obscure so simple a subject."
The Roman Catholic Church at East Hamilton has been commenced upon by the suscessful "tenderer, Mr Price. Mr Price's contract, which includes internal fittings, &c, is £392, aud it is expected that the buiMiug will be completed m about two months' time It is to assißti m this work that the concert nt Le Quesne's Hall, Hamilton Bast, takes place on Monday evening, an enter tainment which, from the heartiness with which ib has been taken up by the public generally, irrespective of creed, promises to be . a most unqualified success. We heartily trust that it may be so. It has been the custom m Mew Zealand, and lon» may it continue, for each Christian denomination m turn, m the building of God's Houses, t > find a large measure of substantial support outside its own confines. In the programme for Monday night's concert this is erainomly observable m .the case of the performers, and we hare no doubt that the character of the audience will testify to the same good feeling on the part of the general public '

The wL'krfts are to be pitched at Cambridge at 10 o'clock on Saturday, play to start at 13.30, m order to get the game over early and enable the I players from a distance to return home.
Alluxing- to the late native Meetings with the Native Minister, the Auckland " Star" says : — " There has been boo much of this playing vrith a rascally bind of -obstinate a vtiges who have set up an authorily unknown to and m oppjsili>n to the law ot the land. T.je policy of the Native Department has had the effect of giving a fictiti xa importance to Tawhiao m the eyes of his followers. They have seen Ministers travelling tn semi-royal state, attended by OinnmU sioners, interpreters and all the paraphernalia of the Native offioj and exercising app*r<;ntly irresponsible power, meeting Tawhiao and the leading Kmgites on a footing of equality, hob-nobing *i h prominent rebels, felons, and red handod murderers, and they have learned by the exainp c of Europeans to attach a dig n»ty and irapjrchanos to the Bu-citle>l King quite foreign to their own estimate of lawhiao's position. Tawhiao, Kewi, and the entire band of Kin^ites, are m the eye of the law, traitors and rebels, and many of them murderers. C m any respect for the authority of the law bd engendered m the minds of ihe natives by ceremonious conferences with such persons ?" The Intelligent Vagrant, m com rne»tin-( upon the action for libel preferred against him by Mr Travers, says : "Perrier is putting away his portabl.prouerty so as to avoid payment of ilia £400 m case he should lose.
