WAIKATO AND THAMES RAILWAY.
We had good reason to believe when our last issue went to press, that the statement of the * Herald,' that the survey of the above line was to be at once undertaken, was just a step further than the exact facts of the case warranted, and we therefore re-published its account of the matter without comment, We now see that that paper, m its issue of yesterday, has discovered its mistake, and has " harked back " upon something like the true scent. It is at least satisfactory to see that the matter occupies the attention of the Public Works Department. The ? Herald' says:— -"We have made farther inquiries regarding the pioposed survey of the line of railway through the Thames Valley to Waikato, and have ascertained that Mr. Stewart's instructions are so far very limited. They are simply to explore a line. He is not to be m any way tied down by the line explored by Mr. D. Simpson m 1873, but merely to procure the. most practicable line. It is intended to have the terminus at Hamilton, but the engineer is not to be tied down even by this consideration, as the terminus will be made to depend m a great measure on engineering facilities. The present survey, as may therefore be anticipated, being more au exploration than an actual survey, can only form the basis for further, operations should the Government decide to carry on the line, but without further instructions the line will not be pegged, nor will the necessary steps be taken for making it an actual working- survey. The orders to Mr. Stewart are that the exploration should be proceeded with forthwith, and we have no doubt those instructions will be carried out."
