THE ARREST.
On the receipt of the intelligence of the murder and escape of Te Patue,, Mr Kirk, clerk of the Court at Alexandra, who .is also* a constable in the Armed . Constabulary Force, put himself in communication with Major Mair, and, taking with him a man named Nbrgrove, started with the intention, of intercepting him. When near Baskerville's or Logan's Creek, as it is called, about 3 a.m., their attention was attracted Iby the barking of ; a little dog at Mr Hodson's place, and soon they could hear the clatter of horses' .hoofs upon the road. The two men. then took up a position, one on each side the roadway, where the furze-bushes encroaching on the road, compelled the horseman to pass through a narrow space. : He evidently saw or heard them, for he : put his horse to a hand-gallop and came on.brandishing a double-barrelled fowlingpiece :in his hands. ■ As he passed they rushed him,-, [and though Mr Kirk received a blow from the gun right on his head, they managed to drag ■ him from his horse, and hurling . themselves : upon him, threw him down, after a stout resistance. He then feigned .to be dead, but they revived him by applying a lighted match to his nose, and; brought him in to Alexandra, whence he was yesterday morning conveyed to Hamilton in Mr Boon's spring-cart. He arrived at Hamilton at 3 p.m., and after changing horses the cart conveyed him, in charge of Constables Kirk and Murray, to Ngaruawahia, where the dead body lay waiting an inquest. Colonel Lyon was in Ngaruawahia yesterday investigating the circumstances of the case. - . •• /
