DESTRUCTION OF PHEAS ANTS BY HAWKS.
Sir, — AUovr me through your eo'umnsto can the attention of YVaikato iportsmeu to the great number of hawks at p e»ent in the diatnct. I belief c the scarcity of pheasant iaat season, complied with the previous year, 11 due mainly to the huyoc made bj hawks. A gentleman assured me that while riding l»«t summer, he obserred a hn»k strike one of a brood of joung {.hea«autt, and although he lnurieJ to the spot, the hawk, had time to it ike and kill a lecond bird, thus showing that the; kill, not merely to satisfy hunger, but fiom the spirit of destruction, We hare organised a club here on a small scale, and already orer forty hawks' heads have been paid for. I would tuggest I hat the gentl. men of your side of the Wuikato al«o form a club, a few pound* would bo sufficient, and now that the lambing se«BCCaon is coming on, many hawk* would be destroyed, nnd nmi y pheasant* would be preserved fur next season's aport. — I am, Ac, J It Rochk. Io Awumutu, Aug 9ib, 1876.
