TUESDAY JULY 18 IS7G. THLJWAIKATO BRJDUE.

The meeting held on Saturday to consider the means for securing a bridge over the river at Hamilton, was very largely attended, and by the mosfcinflnentml settlers of ll»e district The necessity for tho work was clearly shown, find tho benefit it would be, not only to the district but to tho Government. The whole of the produce on the East side of the river, by far the greater than that raised on the West, will, when the railway rnns to Hamilton, until this bridge be constructed, be cut off from the station, .and will, the railway notwithstanding, be sont down the rivor in preference. This will be readily nnderstood when wo explain that a full load ea -not cross by punt_ Half (lie load has to be taken ofi*, and the one half having been taken over and unloaded, the dray folurns for the other half, and reloads the rccminder already deposited on the other >ide. This entails loss of time, labour, and money on the farmer and to such nn extent as to be rrohibitiva of c image. Double the pro-sent toll would be gladly paid for the convenience a bridge would afford ;>but even the present tolls, it was shown, would pay interest and sinking fund on a bulge that would cost £10,000, and one gentleman, Capt Steele, even volunteered to pay JS7OO a year for seven years for the pvivilige of keeping snch toll bar. Surely %utea, such as these must show the government tho rcas-on ableness of the request made by the Waikato settlers. Wo would go even a step further, und say that the neglect of this matter on the part of the government is an injustice to Waikato whioh it has illdeserved, and seems to make good the statement of some that snch districts as are mobt politically opposed to the powers that be, siro just those which receive the most attention to their wants and necessities.
