POST OFFICE AND TELEGRAPH STATION, HAMILTON EAST.
At the close of the Town Board Meeting on Saturday, Mr Seddoa again took tlie chair, imd Mr Wm Cuairaing, in proposing the resolution, which he then read : "That this Meeting ii of opinion that tbe establishment of a Po3t Office And Telegraph Station.i* urgently raquirei for East Hamilton, and, that Messrs Claude and Cumming be appointed to d*aw up a memorial to the G-enaral Government, prajing that the same be forthwith ostab'iihed," said, it would be unnecessary for him to dilate upon the necessity of the jt >})o«tion. All classes and sections of the community in Hamilton, and throughout the adjoining districts, experience 1 the sime wank, and were subject to t e sime loss, difficulty, and annoyance. It could soas*<e'y bo couceirsd thai-, in tho case of a river, wi(.h n puut plying on demand, dividing Eait and West Hamilton, one sido -should bo supplied with » daily mail, while the other side had three mails only per week, wh lr, as to telegraph communicition, twenty* four hours sometimes elapiol bctwesntho receipt of n telegram nnd iU dolirtry on this aide tho river. Many othor cases of a sinvlar nature could ba b-ought forward to show the Io3S and inconvenience the East Hamilton district experienced. In mrfking this statement, unl relating these faoti, he did not, for i moment <«uh to imply any want of ertrtion rr attention on tho part of Iha presant Postmaster and Tdegraphi.t, as ha could bjar personal testimony to that gentlemm'* attention and punctuality, but, simply to fc'ie foot l.lut taere was too much work 'for the present staff to accomplish without great iocon-onience and loss to the public. With tho-© l fsw remarks, he bfgpel to move tin resolution he had read. Mr Olaudo, in a short and appro* priato speech, seconded tho resolution, endorsing the whole of tho propoaer'a remarks, baring, himself, tuitained similar bis And aunoyaacs i:i respect ti the postal ttrrangamsnt and telegram?. The prop >»itian was carrie J unaoiimualy, with ft strong expression of feoJin^ of regret that tabdistrict »h'>u'd be 10 circumstanced. A memorial, setting forth the wiihsi of the meeting, was -aflerirards di-awn-up, as follows, and tntntmit'ed, on Tuesday moraing, to the Fostnmter-Gteneral : — "TO TJIE POSTMHTBR.&BIOHIAL. — Sir,~Wfl hare the honor to bring to your notioo . (referring to the abore re'olution) the disadvantages w» arA plftded andar, owing to tho want of snflUient postal and telegraphic accommodations. 'Ist. Owing to the difficulties and delays of communication with Clio present telegraph station, and' tho pressure of buiin-is, rendering it imposiiblo.for the telographtst, at a rule, to delta? meeinp;p» with 'that expedition which, is so essential in matters of business, ws are to a great extent debarred from tbe benefits derived from telegraphij communication. 2nd. In the matter of postal accommodation, we are placed under • great disadvantage in having our. mii!s dslivertd at least twolva hours after thoir arrival at Hamilton West, and, in only having three mails per week, whereas, residents on the other side Hre a daily mail. 3rd. We would roipectfully submit that, in our opinion, an equal, if not a greater portion of tho revenue at present derived, rfrom both telegrams and letters, is paid by settlers on the eastern sido of tho river. As we hare no doubt that if the office bt established, it would prove satisfactory, we therefore respectfully request that you will sjrre the matter your favorable consideration. Finally, we wish to draw your attention to tho fact that it would be conferring a great boon upon tbe settlers in. tbe adjoining district* of Xirikiriroa. Tamahoro, and Piako. -We have, &a, Wm Cfhanm and P E Claws. Hamilton East, July 10."
